Rila monastery of St. John of Rila

The special place, which the monastery occupies in the minds of the Bulgarians, was expressed in 1927 with its proclamation as "People’s Heritage". The role of the state for the preservation of the monastery increased in 1961 when, with Decree 403 of the Presidium of the National Assembly, the Rila Monastery was proclaimed national property and its transformation into a National Museum began. The monks were moved in other monasteries, but in 1968 they were allowed to return.
At the 7th session of UNESCO World Heritage Committee, held in Florence from 5 to 9 December 1983, the Rila Monastery was declared World Heritage site, and in 1992 the monastery passed under the jurisdiction of the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.
