Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak

The Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak is located in the north-eastern part of the modern city of Kazanlak. It is situated in a territory that once belonged to the military-political alliance, known as the Thracian Odrysian Kingdom. Today it is considered as one of the masterpieces of the early Hellenistic art.

After the discovery of the tomb in April 1944 different measures for the conservation, restoration and the display of the monument were undertaken, which were strongly focused on the preservation of the wall-painting decoration. Subsequently, the idea for the construction of an exact replica of the tomb was adopted, which was realized in 1973 ‒ 1974.

On account of its great historical, artistic and scientific value, as well as its preserved authenticity and the provided protection, the Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak was declared a Monument of World Cultural Heritage in October 1979.
